Arbor Day in Charleston

In Mayor Riley’s 2012 State of the City Address, he proposed the creation of a new organization that would be “committed to the reforestation and beautification of the edges of our suburban neighborhoods.” He was speaking about Charleston’s new 10,000 Trees Commission that seeks to support the planting of trees along highways, shopping areas, streets and parks throughout the city. The goal is to plant new trees along 7 key Charleston corridors: Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, Glenn McConnell Boulevard, Savannah Highway, St. Andrews Boulevard, Old Towne Road, Folly Road, and Upper Meeting Street to enhance the streetscape, livability and beauty of Charleston.

Business Support
10,000 Trees For Charleston 1In honor of Arbor Day 2013, the President and CEO of Baker Motor Company, Tommy Baker, has purchased 100 oak trees to gift to businesses and private property owners along Savannah Highway. Beginning December 6, 2013, on a first come first serve basis, private property owners may claim a tree at no cost by contacting 10,000 Trees For Charleston. Residents and businesses owners can plant the tree on their property along Savannah Highway, helping to increase the charm and beauty of this highly traveled corridor. Mr. Baker’s mission is to have all 100 trees planted before the year is over.

Community Driven
The 10,000 Trees Initiative is funded through community and corporate donations and grants. Donations are used to fund design plans, permits, and trees. Please Sponsor/Donate a tree in a corridor near you. A donation of $300 will plant one tree along any one of the seven corridors. This donation includes the cost of the tree, planting, and maintaining it for the first year. Trees are the gift that keeps on giving, providing shade to our roadways and beautifying our community. Please note any size donation is appreciated and accepted.
