America Recycles Day 1In celebration of America Recycles Day, Charleston County Environmental Management has announced Community Collection Day on Saturday, November 16. Located this year at James Island Elementary School from 9:00am-1:00pm, the event serves to offer Charleston County residents a central location to drop off their discarded items that are not collected via the County’s residential curbside recycling program. highlight the benefits of reuse and to remind residents of other options for disposal. This event not only diverts recyclable material from the landfill, but also highlights the benefits of reuse and reminds residents of other options for disposal.

In addition to accepting recyclable material collected curbside, other recyclable items, such as paint and electronic waste, can be dropped off to be recycled or reused by community partners. Pet Helpers, Goodwill, and Habitat for Humanity will on site collecting material for their organizations.

Items accepted for recycling:

  • Paint
  • Tires
  • Household Chemicals
  • Motor Oil and Cooking Oil (in disposable container)
  • E-waste: printers, TVs, computers, fax machines
  • CDs/DVDs/CD casesVHS/Cassette tapes
  • Extension cords/Holiday lights
  • All Paper Products (i.e. cardboard, books, magazines, newspaper, gift wrap, junk mail)
  • Batteries (household and automotive)
  • Light bulbs
  • Items from home renovations: cabinets, sinks, etc.
  • Eyeglasses and hearing aids
  • Tennis balls
  • Clean plastic grocery bags

Pet Helpers will be collecting animal shelter items such as towels, blankets, pet crates, collars and leashes.
Goodwill will be collecting thrift store items such as clothing, shoes, furniture, functioning appliances, tools, and home decor.
On-site shredding of documents will be available.
